Today in my sixth grade Drama class I asked my students why they thought the characters in "Into the Woods" were not given names. (The characters are called things like "the baker," "the baker's wife," "little red riding hood," and "the wolf.")

One eager little girl raised her hand and started with, "Okay, so say they were to give the wolf a name like 'Joe the Wolf...' "
